How it Works:
The framework divides situations into five domains:
Obvious (or Clear): Cause and effect are clear, and the situation is stable. This is the domain of best practice, where you "sense-categorize-respond".
Complicated: Cause and effect are discernible but require analysis or expertise. This is the domain of experts, where you "sense-analyze-respond".
Complex: Cause and effect are discernible only in retrospect, and the situation is unpredictable. This is the domain of emergence, where you "probe-sense-respond".
Chaotic: Cause and effect are unclear, and rapid action is needed to establish stability. This is the domain of rapid response, where you "act-sense-respond".
Disorder (or Confusion): It's unclear which of the other domains applies. The response is to break down the situation into smaller parts and categorize them accordingly.
Examples:
Obvious: Following a standard operating procedure for processing a customer order.
Complicated: Diagnosing and repairing a complex piece of machinery.
Complex: Developing a new marketing strategy where the response of customers is uncertain.
Chaotic: Responding to a sudden natural disaster or a system-wide failure.
